Structural correspondence, indirect reference, and partial truth: phlogiston theory and Newtonian mechanics
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper elaborates on the following correspondence theorem (which has been defended and formally proved elsewhere): if theory T has been empirically successful in a domain of applications A, but was superseded later on by a different theory T* which was likewise successful in A, then under natural conditions T contains theoretical expressions φ which were responsible for T's success and correspond (in A) to certain theoretical expressions φ* of T*. I illustrate this theorem at hand of the phlogiston vs. oxygen theories of combustion, and the classical vs. relativistic theories of mass. The ontological consequences of the theorem are worked out in terms of the indirect reference and partial truth. The final section explains how the correspondence theorem may justify a weak version of scientific realism without presupposing the no-miracles argument.

Structural realism versus standard scientific realism: the case of phlogiston and dephlogisticated air
The aim of this paper is to revisit the phlogiston theory to see what can be learned from it about the relationship between scientific realism, approximate truth and successful reference. It is argued that phlogiston theory did to some extent correctly describe the causal or nomological structure of the world, and that some of its central terms can be regarded as referring. However, it is concl...
متن کاملThe Newtonian Limit of Relativity Theory and the Rationality of Theory Change
The aim of this paper is to elucidate the question of whether Newtonian mechanics can be derived from relativity theory. Physicists agree that classical mechanics constitutes a limiting case of relativity theory. By contrast, philosophers of science like Kuhn and Feyerabend affirm that classical mechanics cannot be deduced from relativity theory because of the incommensurability between both th...
متن کاملTruth and Quantum Mechanics
The logic of a physical theory reflects the structure of the propositions referring to the behaviour of a physical system in the domain of the relevant theory. It is argued in relation to classical mechanics that the propositional structure of the theory allows truth-value assignment in conformity with the traditional conception of a correspondence theory of truth. Every proposition in classica...
متن کاملJeffery Hamel Flow of a non-Newtonian Fluid
This paper presents the Jeffery Hamel flow of a non-Newtonian fluid namely Casson fluid. Suitable similarity transform is applied to reduce governing nonlinear partial differential equations to a much simpler ordinary differential equation. Variation of Parameters Method (VPM) is then employed to solve resulting equation. Same problem is solved numerical by using Runge-Kutta order 4 method. A c...
متن کاملVibration Analysis of Carotid Arteries Conveying Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Surrounding by Tissues
The high blood rate that often occurs in arteries may play a role in artery failure and tortuosity which leads to blackouts, transitory ischemic attacks and other diseases. However, vibration and instability analysis of carotid arteries are lacking. The objective of this study is to investigate the vibration and instability of the carotid arteries conveying blood under axial tension with surrou...
